4 V 4 OFFICIAL RULES
Ball Size: Size Three (3)
Field Size: 20 yards x 25 yards
Goal Size: 5' high x 5' wide
Number of Players:
A. The maximum number of players on the field per team at any one time is four (4). The game is played without a goalkeeper.
B. Substitutions are unlimited and are allowed during any dead-ball situation, and for injuries.
C. Playing Time: Each player shall play a minimum of 50% of the total playing time regardless of skill level, and, as long as the child arrives prepared to play in the proper uniform; is not under disciplinary suspension; is not physically handicapped due to illness or injury.
The Referee:
The coaches or their designees will serve as the referees on the field.
Duration of the Game:
A. The game shall be divided into four (4) ten (10) minute quarters.
B. There shall be a two (2) minute break between quarters one and two, and between quarters three and four.
C. There shall be a half-time break of five (5) minutes.
The Start of Play:
Play should be started with a kick-off at the center mark of the field. Encourage the opposing team to stand 3-5 yards from the ball at each re-start.
Ball In and Out of Play:
A. Any ball crossing the touch line or goal line in the control of a player should be allowed to continue as long as the player attempts to bring the ball back into play, without interfering with objects outside the field of play. If the player continues in a direction away from the field, or towards the back of the goal area, play shall cease immediately. Coaches are encouraged to use discretion so the flow of the game can continue as best as possible.
B. When the ball is played in, it is to be placed on the touchline closest to where it exited the field. The player will then pass the ball in. If the ball crosses the end-line, the ball is to be placed in a manner to simulate a goal kick, or corner kick, depending on possession. This is an opportunity to introduce rules of the game, and to allow coaches the chance to teach in game scenarios. Players shall not take throw-ins.
Free Kicks:
Free Kicks are not applicable for this age group. Play should be restarted after a stoppage by coaches as soon as possible to best keep play in progress.
Offside:
The offside rule is not applicable to this age group.
Scoring:
Neither attackers nor defenders shall enter the goal arc area (marked) in front of the goal during play. The purpose of this arc is to create an environment with more scoring opportunities for young players and to prevent teams from positioning a defender directly in front of the net. The use of a goalkeeper is not allowed at this age level.
Misc. Rules:
A. GYSA encourages healthy and positive sports competition and puts a priority on the developmental process and the quality of play instead of the game outcome. It is not our desire to instill the "killer instinct" in the player, but rather to foster physical fitness, knowledge of the sport, agility, quick thinking and aggressive offensive and defensive play. Dangerous play and/or abusive language to coaches, players, or referees will not be tolerated.
B. Parents/coaches and spectators should be there to enjoy the game, foster a positive sporting environment and to encourage the activity of all the youngsters participating in the game.
